How It Works

Fallback recommendations

Keep the Cart discovery moment useful when co-purchase evidence or manual choices do not fill every available recommendation space.

Give every Cart a considered next step

Smart Cart Recommendations begins with the strongest available history-based and manual product candidates. Some Carts, especially those containing new products or products with limited qualifying order history, may not have enough candidates to reach the product count you have chosen.

Fallback recommendations give the GoScript Smart Cart Recommendations WordPress plugin a practical way to keep those open spaces useful while preserving the same availability and exclusion standards as every other candidate.

Fallbacks come after smart and manual candidates

The plugin does not replace strong co-purchase relationships or your direct product choices with a fallback. It first evaluates eligible history-based candidates and manual recommendations, combines and cleans the available list, then looks to your fallback option only when spaces remain.

Smart evidence firstQualifying co-purchase relationships keep priority when they are available for the current Cart.
Manual choices respectedDirect product pairings are considered before a fallback needs to complete the section.
Fallback fills the gapOnly the remaining open spaces can be filled with your selected fallback candidates.

Choose the Cart experience you want

Smart Cart Recommendations offers three fallback approaches:

  • Best sellers - bring proven popular products into open spaces when the Cart needs more options.
  • Newest products - give recently added catalogue products a considered opportunity to be discovered.
  • No fallback - keep the Cart section strictly limited to smart and manual candidates.

Each option supports a different merchandising philosophy. The right choice depends on how broad, selective, or launch-focused you want the Cart section to feel.

Fallback products still need to be ready for shoppers

Fallback candidates do not bypass the final product rules. They still need to be published, visible, in stock, purchasable, not already in the Cart, not duplicated, and outside any global product, category, or tag exclusions.

When each option can shine

Best sellers can be a strong starting point when you want to keep Cart discovery grounded in products that already attract interest. Newest products can be useful when you are introducing a changing or growing catalogue. No fallback works well when only data-backed or merchant-selected pairings should appear.

Try each option with representative Cart combinations, then review the finished section alongside your product count and display settings. A fallback is most effective when it feels like a natural extension of the Cart rather than an unrelated product feed.

Refine as your purchase history grows

Fallback behaviour is designed to complement your recommendation strategy, not lock it in. As products gain qualifying co-purchase history and you add more manual pairings, you can revisit your choice and make the Cart experience more selective when the evidence supports it.
